As a therapist I find so many women are feeling more and more disconnected from their lives and searching for fulfillment. We look for influence and inspiration from outside sources and we drift further from the genuine spark of brilliance within our own mind. Each day is a continual juggling act and scarcity has become the mantra. “I am exhausted”, “I am too busy”, “I don’t have enough….time, energy, sanity, money…” and we are left feeling empty. The question is did we lose ourselves or did we never connect with who we are?
Are we simply too distracted to notice the passionate, creative, innocent, powerful, and joyful creature inside? Let’s actually consider the time you last spent thinking your own thoughts instead of the plethora of opinions of others. When was the last time you were fully connected to yourself?
Inside the brain are mirroring neurons and they are responsible for absorbing and imitating the experiences and emotions we encounter every day. Every time you make a human connection the neurons in your brain fire and then fuse together. The joys and sorrow of human connections actually change the structure of neurons and pathways in the brain. When you take time, however fleeting the moment is, and cultivate an emotional connection the brain begins wiring around that experience. This is why it has to become a regular practice of connecting with yourself and the life that ignites your passions.
I am not suggesting that you throw off all of your responsibilities but simply build in meaningful moments of turning your mind back to itself. Find time to take a walk, breathe in a flower or essential oil that excites you, listen to music that fills your spirit, or practice something that reminds you of your true interest. For me, I walk in my garden almost daily and try to keep my thoughts completely free. I spend at least 30 mins each day dreaming without pressure, stress, or opinions of others. It is the one place in the world where I am understood. I use essential oils to practice deep breathing and I take time to be alone even for brief periods of the day. Turn back to yourself and allow yourself to experience the beautiful creature you are.
